For all of the year 2020 I have been doing solo research surrounding themes of childcare and climate change using dance, humor, props, and physical characters. As a preschool teacher by day, I reflect on the grimness of the future almost daily, as I watch the children "swim around the room like polar bears" (prompted by a kids' song) and reflect on the irony. I first performed an iteration of this research at the Window Room in late February. The pandemic has altered things in a strange way: currently, my empty preschool building in which I do occasional work, has become my sanctuary and personal rehearsal space. Ideally, my performance consists of some continuation of this research that I perform live in the school building, or perhaps even a short film that I put together exploring similar content. These are the videos I made as part of this exploration.

doctor baby is the first short in a series of dance films that explore themes of childcare and ownership. Filmed in the backyard of an empty preschool in West Philadelphia, doctor baby  humorously juxtaposes kids’ doctor play tools, a laminated image of a crying toddler, and a plastic poncho-clad dancer in order to pose a more unsettling question: what do caretakers really know about the future?
